Ed the first one that I tried to enlarge had the " Updated drawing and added PDF and DWG files. It's just the stupid windows picture viewer, I'm sure.
Anyway I put some dowel pins mic'd @.3745 into one of my toolholders and then meausured the distance between them with my Mitutoyo 293-705 electronic mic via my telescoping guage.
The telescopic guage is possibly the weak link in the chain but they have always worked well for me for bores under 2".
I got .7441" if we consider the .0015 x 2 difference between our "guage pins I would have .7411 compared to your .7395 =1.6
thou. difference. So given that our QCTP and holders aren't from the same source I think the difference lies in the lower quality of mine, or acceptable tolerance.
All this blather to say I'm happy with what I've got and thank you for the chance to do the measuring thing with the dowel pins so I can go ahead and make some toolholders!Thumbsup
Aw the joys of geometry, one of the many classes we thought we'd never need. Steve that difference in dia on the pins moves the point contact on the angled part so they could well move apart .0046. I know I tried to do the calculation a while back and screwed it up. Maybe Ed would be big hearted enough to use your pin size in his drawing.

Easy peasy.

Proves nothing, there is too much possibility that other dimensional innacuracies exist. The chances that the El Cheapo device that I have and the Paramount Aloris are dimensionally precisely the same are slim to say the least.
I am totally satisfied that with what I have learned about the measurement using known dimensional dowel pin "guages"
Thanks again Greg and Ed.
I start whacking with the mill and when I get close I go take the tool post off the lathe and use it as a gauge works everytime

I totally agree Steve. There ain't no chance in hell our tool holders are going to be the same, dimensionally. I chose my Phase II tool holder to take the measurements off of since I assumed it would be the higher quality of the two brands I have. The other brand being CDCO Tools.

David,

That's cheating! Big Grin

Great Ed! as I mentionned, thanks to your drawing I have the knowledge I need to mill some holders.Thumbsup
I'll inform of my progress (don't wait upRotfl)

That ain't going to happen. Rotfl Rotfl

Yep, seems to work for me as well. All this faffing about with dowel pins and micrometers seems a bit much Rotfl Rotfl Rotfl
