Almost every dump has a no picking policy now in place, they claim for insurance reasons. --BUT----- it was OK for the past 70 years!!
I picked our local dump for 30 years, collected more good hardware than i ever needed and gave lots away who could use it.
The contents of rural dumps are changing anyway, 90% is just crap, broken appliances, plastic everything. used to get GOOD stuff years back.

Its amazing what city dwellers toss here when they come up to the cottage.
Was helping DR Burwell fix his tractor today, he's a junk collector extraordinaire the guys at the dump even save the good stuff for him. Anyway this was laying in the shed, gas powered reciprocating saw. He says it cut remarkably smooth and fast, even has a spare blade for it.

I wonder why they never caught on? Is the lower, toothed, black portion the only part of the blade that moves? Or does the whole blade reciprocate? If the former, I could see problems lubricating between the moving portion and the fixed "backer".

Probably because they are like a shaper, wasting time on a return stroke when that time could be used for cutting.

Just the bottom portion moved Steve. Didn't have time to look it over close enough to see if it even had an oiling system. Must have. What surprised me was that he said it wasn't hard to hold on to, thought it would want to move the saw rather than the blade. It shouldn't be able to kick back at you. It might make an interesting design for the electric home owner variety.
