Ken,

I have a 16ER tool and would like to get a 16IR tool. Can you recommend one for me? My 16ER is a Kennametal which I got from MCS when it was on sale.

Would a 16IR tool be able to cut the 10TPI acme right hand thread that I need for my lead screw nut? The ID of the bore is about .845"

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,

If you looked close at the photo of the tool I got, sitting on top of the old Valenite catalog, you'd see that an SIR 500 M16 is the smallest one that takes the 16IR inserts, and it's minimum bore size is Ø .640". Note the "L2" max depth is 1.250", but that's easily lengthened by just turning it back a little more.

Honestly, I don't know if it's worth having one. Of the 4 or 5 internal threading bars I have, I've used maybe two, twice. Why don't you just let me send you one of mine to use for as long as you need it? And yes it will accept a 16IR-10ACME insert, which you can by singly from KBC tool for a fair price.

Before we go any further I have to look at the helix angle and whether or not it's possible. You say the minor diameter of the thread is .845", so what is the major diameter? Until you get to a 3/4" bar they don't have interchangeable anvils and may not be able to do a really coarse pitch thread. A 10TPI thread is right on the edge. I'm (slowly) downloading the Vardex "TTGen" software now to see what tools they recommend. If insert threading doesn't work, the software tells you better than charts in catalogs do.

Is it a RIGHT or LEFT hand thread Ed. Believe me, you don't want to go to all that trouble and have the wrong thread Bash

Already double checked that Darren and the X lead screw is right hand thread and the Y lead screw is a left hand thread.

I looked it up and replied in the Milling Machine section on your thread about the worn out nut on your machine.

Are we ready?

Today's delivery, actually from USPS (US Postal Service), not UPS (Useless Parcel Service) was six tools I bought off a single eBay seller for a grand total of $66.75 US including shipping.

Two Data Flute brand 3 flute solid carbide end mills, one Ø 3/32" and one Ø 1/8" both with 3/8" length of cut. Coated with (I think) zirconium nitride for aluminum. $8.00 each

One Accupro 4 flute solid carbide Ø .125" solid carbide end mill with 1" length of cut. I've had a couple of kobs where one of these would have been convenient, probably never need one again now that I have one. (Murphy's Law, Chapter 22, paragraph 4) $12.50

One Morse Tool HSS 3/16" corner radius cutter, Ø 3/4" shank, four flute. I already have the 1/16", 1/8". 1/4", and 3/8", trying to fill in the in between sizes with quality tools. The others were a kit my dad bought from Enco, all Ø 3/8" shanks and made in China. I hope to find more US made good ones at this price, $14.45

One Alford Polk HSS Ø .2495" chucking reamer, also made in USA, never used from what I can tell by looking close. $12.80

One Titex A4711-19.7 HSS MT2 taper shank drill, Ø 19.7mm, used but resharpened nicely. This will be perfect for the next time I need to have a Ø 20mm reamed hole, which should be never now that I have it. (Murphy's Law, Chapter 23, paragraph 2) $11.00

From another seller, the only one that wasn't a "Buy It Now" option. I had one other bidder against me, starting bid of $0.99. It closed at $22.50 for ten Walter CCGT32.50.5-PF2 (ISO designation CCGT09T302-PF2) in grade WN10. This is the very best chipbreaker and grade you will EVER find for finishing cuts on aluminum, and the WXN10 being a nano-layer TiCN coating it can also cut nearly any other material (at lower cutting speeds.) These have an .008" (0.2mm) corner radius.

Funny thing is, I don't (yet) own a single turning tool or boring bar which takes this size & shape insert. I would like to share my good fortune with my friends here who DO have holder(s) for them, and need something that breaks a chip in aluminum. All I ask it that you cover my costs, limit two per person for the first 8 pieces. I'm keeping two in case I come upon a deal for a holder. PM me or email me for making arrangements if you want a couple.

P.S. - So sorry about the orientation of some of the photos. They were all taken with my phone and uploaded to Photobucket. There I rotated all to horizontal and they looked right, but still getting this crap.

Nice to know that at least two members have so much time on their hands that they actually read all that I splooged out, right down to the end.

4 out of 8 so far.

I read it, I have 3 boring bars and 3 turning holders that take those inserts. Thumbsup  Trouble is the postage is a killer Bash

I was also admiring the last photo the one of the insert - damn good from a phone.
