I still don't understand what this is for
but the machining looks great! I can't wait to play with my lathe and see what kinds of things I need to make myself for it

This project taught me that I needed some new tools. I used a boring bar that I got long ago prior to knowing anything about insert boring bars. I only know a little more now but I digress.
I got this boring bar some number of years ago.

I used those on the cat eye project and it was not the best for boring up to a shoulder so I just order this new boring bar, along with a couple of inserts, from Maritool, one of my favorite tool suppliers.

I much prefer the CCMT type of insert for over the "TP" type, but what the hell do I know.

Ed, pardon my inability to decipher technicalese but what are the differences of the 4 ccmt inserts shown under that nifty looking boring bar.

Steve,
Two are designed with a carbide grade for stainless steel machining with a different tip radius on each. The other two are designed for cutting steel alloys with a different tip radius on each.
