X and Y lead screw is 10 TPI 1/10 = .100 per rev
I did another indicator check the Z column lead screw must be some where around 8 TPI as 1/8 = .125 per rev
It appears the book is incorrect "that's what the man said"
Yup ill have to take off way cover and verify pitch when I make a dial thanks

Had some down time last 2 weeks with the motor on the new mill.. That problem is now fixed and i am up and running .Not much time to work in the garage  this week had some family issues to care for. Well i did make some grounds over weekend  as i checked the tram on the mill . I decided to try my brand new used indicator that i acquired from e bay .  (Couldn't pass it up). Its a vintage indicator made in England . called Yup " Spot on" And to my surprise the table to mill column  is under .0005 . Best i can check with this instrument .
Ohh! did fig a way to adjust quill down feed accurately altho its  still not calibrated correctly .. thought i was going to need to make modify something with a quill stop...  for use of gauge blocks like a BP mill.   The PM 932 PDF does not have an accurate  quill Z stop Bc it has the power feed option . You can adjust the down feed release clutch . But need to do so by dial which is not calibrated .  

OK on to my first project  what better place to start  but for the mill . The PM 932 PDF does not have a knee . The column moves up and  down with a Z axis motor  (in rapid) but also  has a hand crank  with no way of  incrementing measurement without a Z axis DRO. Maybe the future ill add one but for now this idea will do.  Besides I always preferred a dial gauge over a DRO.  

 For  heavy cuts and accurate milling operations I  prefer to have the quill locked in the upper most  position . Yet still be able to feed down  Z in thousands increments with use the column crank.

Here is the stupid simple  idea Ive come up with .   It uses a magnetic indicator base to the Z column with adjustable height. The mount for the clamp block bolts on to the tapered limit switch stop, clearing both top side and lower Z limit switches.  . The 2nd clamp block has a rod that slides along the Z axis. Which adjusts for total machine Z height .
Once the column/ tooling is  set up in lowest z position . This rod will be locked into place to  zero  indicator.  Than you can use the manual crank to thousandths of an inch. The idea works great it can remain fixed as it clears everything on the column. Pics assembled coming .  Btw I will prob  finish up  with a fine adjustment knob with a dimple to  contact point of the indicator . Maybe if im fancy I may add a few details to the clamp blocks be done with  and on to next project.

Hey guys  haven't had much time to work on mill  till this weekend spent  most time last week or so doing maint on my lathe. Now should be up n running so ill be making a few mods for both.  Alright you  “Gear Heads” have a quick question about gear head mills in how they are supposed to sound when milling.

Recently purchased this mill PM 932.  Milled a few things on 6062alum . Over weekend Did some official milling  taking some roughing cuts and face milling .  This time Primary worked on steels. Not sure of its properties but cuts and looks like a hot roll steel . Found a hunk  ,decided to make my first proj from.   Btw .  Dont laugh at  descriptions best I can do via post.  With proper feed speed/ Rpm/feed  taken no more than .040 Here is what it sounds like. Btw( using   ¾ index able tooling  2 flute) W/ TNMG style inserts and also tried RNMG.
I get a nice thump thump thump at the material / tooling however  a  Grunk grunk grunk sound from the head or up in the column. Is this normal for a gear head type mill ?

Not chatter but a  distinct  “Grunk”  coming fro the head. Btw I did change some tooling style to see if she quieted  down some and she did with a higher speed , but not sure if  its a gear head is  supposed to be noisy up in the head . Again  not  a chatter sound  but a distinct Grunk grunk grunk sound .Here is my  thoughts I suspect the lower the gearing / Rpm the more prominent you may hear this sound so  whats your thoughts ? TIA

What kind of milling cutter takes negative rake lathe tooling? Those kind of inserts, even if presented to the workpiece properly, use a LOT of power in cutting.

I've never seen a single cutter in 3/4" diameter that takes TNMG inserts, and certainly not seen on that could also accept RNMG inserts. Please post photos or links to where you bought it. This I just gotta see!

Why do ya say that  Ed  with Carbide indexable tooling  I dont see why you cant take of .030-.050  slow and steady  of course with proper Rpms... JMHO  I think its Material on this one . The Pm 25mv I had chattered with a ½ drill .  Some how the heads in these china mills dont have any girth.  

I dunno may be  unknown material  found a hunk of steel at work ( co worker brought in )… thought it was tool steel cut it up to make a set of parallels  dont know what this stuff is . Fly cut it at work on BP  wants carbide  speed under 1k  burnt my arms , put holes in a spandex running shirt Lol.. even w/ fllood coolant  and with minimal cuts/ rpm (slowed down) to make brown chip.......... its some hard stuff. Still dont answer my  Q  does a  geared head type mill rumble in head  at low speeds?  Ya think it;s it Bc its only a china made mill or other?

Yea Pix man Howd I know u were gona ask... Its the China made idexable mill cutters I purchase from Shars. Ah ha yup not the best choice , I believe I posted all the pics of my new tooling when I got the PM25MV …i do have other cutters 3/8-5/8  size with APKT stye inserts  have to give them a try see how they perform and how the  mill behaves . Btw  I read  allot what  you wrote about  idexable mill cutters and respect your views .Not sure why my first mill job in steel sounds a bit sketchy .However I do  have good quality inserts in them tho. Hmm...  Any other thoughts other than tooling ?

I say that because I've owned an RF-45 clone mill for about 8 years now and there's no way in hell I could ever take that deep of a cut in steel. Just my opinion based on experiences with my mill.  Smiley-gen163
