I use that blackening process myself, if you burn the oil off after dipping it makes the finish even more durable...

Thanks Tom. How do you burn the oil off without actually burning the oil off? Perhaps a video is in order...

Darren,

Normally when I go for an oil blackened finish it's on an O1 part that has just been hardened. Pulling it out of the oil quench and heating it with the torch just enough to burn the oil off tempers it and leaves a nice black finish.

Basic heat treating in the shop is a good idea for another video. I'll add it to the list.

Here's a couple of shots from the shop I thought someone might find interesting.
Needed to tram the mill, here's the setup I use. An old outer bearing race about 4 inch in dis, looking for a bigger one but this works. They're ground to beter tolerance than I'll ever hope to achieve.

This is a unique drill press vice that was on a bench top drill at a yard sale. The clamp that holds it to the table allows the rod to slide as well as swing. You clamp the part in the jaws, (which have prisms for holding round stock flat or vertical) but the system allows you to move it around to line up on center marks. But the rod is fixed so the part can't spin if the bit grabs.

Greg,

Those are nice drill press vises. I've also seen them with a cam-lock mechanism.

Good idea about the bearing race. Thumbsup

I do like the drill press vise. Are you going to make up the missing jaw?

The race makes a nice smooth surface to measure to.No bounce as you go over the T slots.
The jaw is there Mayhem, its thinner than the fixed one that has the prisms cut on it.

Hmmm, looks like it has the same mounting holes as the opposite side. Chin

Hi Greg , thanks for posting , I found them interesting SmileDrool, The drill press vice looks a simple but handy bit of kit, the large bearing looks good for tramming , I also saw someone using a car or truck brake disc to do the same job of tramming.

Cheers Mick
