It's coming together nicely Greg.

Does it have one those gigantic 1HP motors that Hardinge uses? The high rotating mass of those motors is a contributing factor to the high surface finishes those lathes can produce, not to mention the belt drive.

Yah Tom it has that motor, looks like the 10hp in my big lathe. Went to put the carriage on today, didn't have 20 weight oil so tried some compressor oil on the bed. When I started tightening up the apron it seized solid, washed it off and used 3 in 1 motor oil which it says is sae20, slid like glass. Those are tight tolerances, my friend who is a millwright was here, he couldn't believe that small a difference in viscosity would matter.

You need to use way lube for the carriage. I use Mobil Vactra #2.

The little oil pump on the carriage has sae 20 oil marked on it. Think yours might have the teflon wear pad on the bottom of the saddle, mine is scraped metal, would that make a difference? With a little heavier oil it wouldn't move.

Vactra #2 is SAE 20.
