Todays Project - What did you do today?

Had some time top make chips this evening so I whittled away at my AR-15 forgings a bit. The task at hand was to bore and thread the 1 3/16-16 hole for the buffer tube, the anti rotation hole and the hole for the take down pin detent. The thread was fun because it required a fixture to hold the receiver in the lathe so I could single point the thread (I'm too cheap to buy a tap). I'm going to try to finish them before heading North over the fourth. One can never make too much noise on the fourth of July.

Looking good there Tom. I'm just getting started to work on my 80% lowers(don't have a big enough lathe to do what you're doing). Also just got my new mill up on the bench and was that fun.

Tom where did you get your 80% lower? I assembled a Rock River Lower and am in the process of assembling a DPMS upper.
I wanted a 24" fluted barrel and the only one available that I could find was for a DPMS. Keep us informed on your progress. By the way I also find your YouTube videos very educational keep up the good work.

No videos on this one because there are many already out there. These are actually 0% lowers, or a bare forging. I picked them up from various places online and at gun shows with prices typically around $20. I've heard that Brass Aluminum Forging, LLC, one of the manufacturers will sell them to individuals, but I haven't tried it yet. They are just down the street from me in Ferndale so it would be convenient.

It's 7075-T6 aluminum. It's wonderful stuff to machine, as long as you have sharp tooling. Tom Thanks given by: EdK
Lazy mans work stop .. I needed a quick ( temp) work stop for the mill . But I have like 4 other projects unfinished at home so I dug through my draws and found a bunch of miss fit parts from old indicator bases . Made a column to mach diam w/ T nut thread. . At lunch threaded it 3/8 16 , turned a cross slider and parted a brass washer on my breaks. Added T- nut and brought home a functional part for the time being .I do plan on making a work stop for my mill vice in near future but this will hafta do until have time to make one to attach to back of vice . The next one will be more rigid yet stream line out of the way, with only one pivot moving adjustment for x y and Z.
