The knobs for the step blocks are made of one piece of brass. Maybe that decorative circle on the top is fooling you into thinking it's a two-piece part. I put that in with a 'V' shaped tool bit just for decoration.

aRm, Ed is talking about two different tools....

The larger knob (front and center) on his indexer tail stock, locks the quill into position.



And the knobs on his step blocks have a decorative ring groove on on top, that almost looks like the knobs are two parts pressed together. They are actually one solid piece of material, and the ring(s) seen are only grooves cut into the ends to enhance their looks.

Heck Man, now that U mention it, both these Guys must be some sort of master Graphic Artists working in Photoshop, manipulating those digital Images and all the while blowing the rest of us away with their "Graphic" expertise - whilst we are thinking what class Technical beauts !!!
And we apprentices, ( me rookie/tyro specifically) , can't stop ogling their classical workmanship.
Better beat a hasty retreat here before they pull out their bazookas.

Here is my drawbar hammer.  19mm socket on one end and some obscure brass pipe fitting filled with lead on the other.  The handles are Jarrah (eucalyptus marginata):

Finished the vise stop - well almost - I still have to get/make some better M6x1.0 screws.

I think that is the way I am going to go. I have philips head screws in there now, as that was all I had kicking about here.

You have probably already thought about it , but remember a wee brass/copper  /soft pad so the end of the screw dunt mar the rod .
